Eu sou iniciante no Linux, uso Debian com Cinnamon. Bom, eu não me lembro de ter deletado nada. E agora a pouco quando eu abri meu gerenciador de arquivos, só estão a pasta Área de trabalho e Downloads na minha /home. E ela estava cheia de arquivos e pastas.
Detalhe:
Eu consigo visualizar os arquivos com o comando locate

Não vi nenhuma das pastas que eu perdi aí.

Eu também notei agora que só tem um arquivo na minha pasta de Downloads, e tinham vários. E meu desktop está vazio. Só com o ícone da Steam. Ajuda se eu disser que estava instalando a Steam com o PlayOnLinux quando isso aconteceu?

Se seu /home estiver em uma partição ela precisa ser montada para visualizar os arquivos.
Isso é feito automaticamente por /etc/fstab.

Verifique (e poste aqui ) seu /etc/fstab
