Aumentar resolução Video Intel 945GM - Ubuntu 12.04

Pessoal, blz?

Por favor, vejam se podem me ajudar, estou com um laptop (antiguinho... rs), um Dell Latitude D520 que estava com WinXP, instalei o Ubuntu 12.04 há alguns dias e a resolução máxima que consigo usar é 1024x768, gostaria de usar uma resolução maior que essa (já que no Windows isso era possível), estou há uns 2 dias pesquisando, tentei soluções como o 915 e 945resolution, xrandr entre outras coisas, porém sem sucesso. Rsss... Sou totalmente iniciante em Linux, por isso td o que tentei foi como um tiro no escuro, rs.... enfim, eu gostaria de usar algo como 1280x800, quanto maior a resolução que eu conseguir usar, pra mim é melhor. Tbm baixei o driver xf86-video-intel-2.18.0.tar.gz, porém não faço idéia se é o certo e tbm não sei como instalar.
