Não consigo instalar o NVIDIA no Slackware

Veja bem, nao consigo fazer a instalacao do drive NVIDIA. Veja os erros

1 ) ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before

Pelo que diz ele manda vc fechar o servidor X para fazer a instalação.
Não me lembro agora como fecha o servidor X, mas vc pode fazer o seguinte, vá para o terminal ALT+F1 e acesse como root, digite killall -9 kdm (se usar kde) ou killall -9 gdm (se usar gnome), pronto seu servidor X está fechado, agora instale e seja feliz.

root@darkstar:~# killall -9 kdm
kdm: no process killed

Não é mais fácil você dar um logout, apenas pra sair da interface?

deu a mesma coisa.

ou:

Finaliza o ambiente gráfico mudando pro modo single-user.

# init 1

Faz o backup do xorg.conf (se existir):

# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /root/xorg.conf-original

Instala o driver:

# sh NVIDIA-algumacoisa.run -a
ou
# ./NVIDIA-algumacoisa.run -a

Configura usando o Xorg:

# Xorg -configure
# cp -av xorg* /etc/X11/xorg.conf


ou configura usando o nvidia-xconfig (faço isso no Arch Linux):

# nvidia-xconfig -A

# nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals \
--allow-glx-with-composite --composite \
--no-logo --nvagp=1 --render-accel \
-o /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Inicia o X:

# init 3


* Eu só não tenho certeza sobre os runlevels do Slack.

Se apesar disso tudo não instalar, pode ser que estejam faltando os compiladores que ficam no CD1.

acho o máximo essa molekadinha que OLHA para uma mensagem de êrro e simplesmente nem se pergunta: "o que será que essa me***a quer dizer?"; treinados como empurradores de mouse, assombram-se.. "ohhhhhhh..." com carinha de burro olhando o palácio.

como já foi dito por outro colega - e o prezado consulente apenas ignorou como um jacaré olhando cenouras - vc não pode instalar o nvidia enquanto o servidor X estiver funcionando. E como "apagar" o servidor X?

No slackware, como root:

# telinit 3

simples, né mesmo? digite isso, vai ficar apenas com terminais (o X "morre"), instale o nvidia e depois:

# telinit 4
# startx &

pra voltar o X-server; ou então (se for o caso) restabeleça o GDM ou KDM ou (se não tiver qualquer dos dois) o XDM:

# ?DM &

substitua o "?" pela letra do seu gerenciador de login, sem esquecer do "&" na linha.
