tentei configurar para Iniciar a sessão automaticamente e agora não inicia mais

Queria que meu ubuntu 9.10 (versão customizada do site linuxnopc.com.br) iniciasse automaticamente a sessão, já que sou o único usuário...
fui em Sistema>Administração>tela de login
apertei o botão desbloquear e marquei iniciar a sessão automaticamente como usuário

a partir da aí ele não inicia mais dá uma série de erros sobre permissões...

entrei pelo modo de recuperação, loguei no modo texto, digitei startx e cá estou...

tentei de novo o Sistema>Administração>tela de login, mas o botão desbloquear não funciona mais...

fui no Sistema>preferências> Menu principal e decobrir que o comando do item Sistema>Administração>tela de login é gdmsetup

então no terminal:
