Pode volta as configurações padrão do vlc, talvez funciona para o seu caso. => $ mv ~/.config/vlc ~/.config/vlc_backup

Tem vários programas para essa finalidade como: vlc , cheese, guvcview, ffmpeg e etc..... Teste e ver ser tem o mesmo problema.
