algumas versões de Ubuntu deveriam configurar a 3D sem usar xorg, mas isso não tem funcionado bem sempre...
primiero saia da sua int. grafica com CRTL+ALT+F1, e com editor nano acesse o xorg.conf:
$ sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Duas situações: sem xorg ou com xorg;
se nâo Tiver um xorg
crie um:
$ cd /
cd etc
cd X11
sudo nano xorg.conf
e coloque nele as linhas abaixo, conforme direções do site:

salve o xorg.conf em /etc/X11 e dê no terminal um comando reboot.
SE JÁ TIVER UM XORG:
copie o seu para protege-lo, depois edite:
cd /
cd etc/X11
sudo cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.copia
sudo nano xorg.conf
e simplesmente, altere as linhas abaixo, na sessão "scren" desse xorg, segundo o site:

se ainda não funcionar, procure pelas strings "OpenGL" e "Composite" no xorg.conf e as altere para enable.
