configurar rede

olá pessoal, estou com a distribuição ubuntu 8.10, queria configurar a rede, porem, fui editar o /etc/network/interfaces e havia somente

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

entao acrescentei

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 10.1.1.102
netmask 255.0.0.0
gateway 10.1.1.1

restartei o serviço e deu o seguinte mensagem de erro
eth0: ERROR while gerring ingerface flags: Nosch devide SIOCSIFADDR: No such divice
eth0: ERROR while gerring ingerface flags: Nosch devide SIOCSIFNETMAS: No such divice
eth0: ERROR while gerring ingerface flags: Failed to bring up eth0

além disso, nao encontrei o /etc/resolv.conf e nem o /etc/hosts.

PRECISO DE AJUDA URGENTE.

amigo, faz o comando

$ifconfig -a

você verá qual interface é a sua... eth0 não é :)
