quando eu mando o comando sudo apt-get install -f aparece:

Não tem repositório no seu Ubuntu como você instala os programas?

Faz backup dos arquivos;
Reinstala o Ubuntu.

Aparentemente esta instalando tudo bem... Mas quando fui instalar o gfortran que começou a dar erro.

Não tem outro jeito sem ser reinstalar?

Você falou que "...quando eu mando o comando cat /etc/apt/sources.list nao apareceu nenhuma mensagem. O resultado a cima e de outra maquina."

Entendo que o arquivo sources.list não tem nada.

De fato quando eu mandava o comando cat /etc/apt/sources.list, no primeiro instante nao apareceu nenhuma mensagem, porem estava fazendo um acesso remoto quando mandei o comando. Quando mandei o comando sem ser por acesso remoto apareceu a mensagem:

Então meu caro...

Os ubuntus da vida não são meu forte, mas pelo que entendi, seu problema por algum motivo está no sources.list.
Tenta pesquisar e ver qual é o sources.list que a versão do seu ubuntu usa, e teste ela.
Talvez, digo talvez ele volte a ficar normal.
Por favor, poderia postar a saída do comando:

cd /var/lib/apt/lists 

Deve ter alguns arquivos com extensões .gpg e por ai a fora.

Eu tenho a impressão que se o seu sources.list esteja bagunçado, e o conteúdo do diretório do comando que pedi a saída esteja de "diferente" digamos assim, o apt fica perdido como podemos ver.
